Who is Lawrence A. Allen, Jr.

Lawrence Allen is a Houston native, and son of father, Lawrence A. Allen, Sr. Retired Principal, and mother, Dr. Alma A. Allen, State Representative and Retired Principal. Allen has dedicated his life to education. After graduating from Jesse H. Jones High School, Allen pursued his undergraduate degree at Prairie View A&M University.

After receiving a Bachelors of Science degree and a Masters degree in Industrial Education, Lawrence Allen, Jr. began his teaching career as a Special Education Teacher at Dowling Middle School, and a woodshop teacher at Lanier Middle School. He later entered in the doctoral program at the University of Houston in Curriculum and Instruction.

Out of a desire to have a greater impact on a wider range of students, Allen Completed his Masters in Education Administration at Prairie View A&M, which enabled him to take on an administrative role. Allen was eager to return to his alma mater, Jesse H. Jones High School, where he served as Assistant Principal. His bottom line impact was observed and he was later Assistant Principal for Jack Yates Sr. High School. His ability to turn around all situations made him the talk of HISD.

Allen returned to Jones High School as Principal, and was eventually promoted to Director of Special Projects, where he is currently employed. In the last legislative session, Allen worked in Austin, championing important issues for HISD. Allen is also currently representing District D, as well as a large portion of Texas, as an elected member of the Texas State Board of Education. Allen was appointed to the Texas State Board of Education, finishing the unexpired term of State Representative Dr. Alma Allen, and was overwhelmingly elected to the position in 2006.

Allen is a dedicated husband of 20 years to Mrs. Clothild "Candy" Jones-Allen and father of four beautiful children. He is also an active member of the Omega Psi Phi Inc. and a proud Mason (Masonic Lodge, East Gate 432).

Allen pledges to:

  • Work to ensure that the residents of District D are safe to walk the streets of Houston.
  • Bring economic growth to the community by creating business opportunities.
  • Work closely with federal, state, and county officials to reduce flooding.
  • Provide more after school programs for our youth.
  • Coordinate elderly activities to promote brighter days for the seasoned Houstonian.
  • Build quality housing for mixed-use and varied income.

Our community is crying for his leadership and, District D will greatly benefit from his presence in City Hall.
